A person who's lived in a culture and outside the culture has the
perspective of both experiencing the culture and seeing its external
effects.
It is for this reason that many of the most insightful writers on
social issues are people who've lived in a country other than one in
which they've been born (I'm thinking Tocqueville, Nietzsche and Ayn
Rand).
