I had the same problem, though my environment is 16-bit dos. The fix as
suggested by several here was very simple, you might try it first.
In MSGED.CFG, after your Name, add "lastread 0". example:
----- MSGED.CFG begins -----
; Msged configuration file
Name "David Bobo" lastread 0
Address 1:112/110{at}fidonet
It works here.
