Raymond, allow me to comment on some of the options below:
RB> + -& -e -hm!c:\temp -i2 -ja- -jm -jyy...
-& (critical error handler) might perhaps be better placed on the command
line to ensure that the handler is installed immediately _before_ any files
are processed. If you specify "-&" in the environment, ARJ will not install
the handler until all switches are processed.
-e Here we go again :-( I wish Robert would make this the default as is the
case with most other archivers. If set in the environment, it just might
have undesirable side-effects during backup operations :-(
-hm!c:\temp (increase filename capacity) Do you actually find this of
advantage when processing fewer than, let's say, 1,000 files?
-i2 This switch is of little value if there's nobody around to watch, for
example during unattended mail processing operations :-) Seeing that you use
-jyy and -&, I assume most of the ARJ processing is in fact in unattended
mode?
-ja- Hmmmm, this appears to be already the ARJ default in view of danger
posed by ANSI bombs, i.e. re-mapping of keyboard.
RB> ...-js.arc.arj.hap.lha.lzh.pah.pak.rar.uc2.zip.zoo -m1 -s2
RB> -wc:\temp\
arc Many (most) *.arc files can benefit from additional compression,
especially if the old Level 5 method (FIDO compatibility) was used.
-m1 In combination with -jm (see earlier), -m1 may increase compression
time _significantly_ for only a small gain in compression.
-s2 To me, -s is one of the most important switches. -s2 is quite
interesting, however, on balance I prefer to associate -s with
the appropriate commands (below).
-wc:\temp\ I wonder if this is still required if you have -hm!c:\temp ?
RB> a -jt -t1.bat.btm.doc.man.rex.txt -x$sw*.*
RB> -zc:\archive\infodata.cmt
-t1 This is a dangerous animal , especially on files with the *.doc
extension which happens to be the default for example with MS Word.
Documents created with MS Word and archived with -t1 will probably
become severly "compressed" as soon as the first EOL (Ctr-Z)
character is encountered by ARJ :-(
-x$sw*.* Curiosity: what are $sw*.* files?
RB> f -jt -t1.bat.btm.doc.man.rex.txt -x$sw*.*
RB> -zc:\archive\infodata.cmt
RB> u -jt -t1.bat.btm.doc.man.rex.txt -x$sw*.*
RB> -zc:\archive\infodata.cmt
RB> m -d -jt -t1.bat.btm.doc.man.rex.txt -x$sw*.*
RB> -zc:\archive\infodata.cmt
-d I don't think -d is supported with the "m" command, as move by
itself already deletes files after archiving is completed.
"a -d" (add and delete) would be the equivalent to "m".
RB> y -jt -je
y with -je as a default? Are you quite certain that you always wish to
create a self-extracting file whenever "y" is executed?
RB> e -v
RB> l -jp50 -jv
-jp50 Which display mode do you use to list 50 lines at a time?
-jv The "-jv" switch will display only the pathnames stored within
the archive. No other listing data is displayed. This switch
is often used in the creation of list files with "v".
RB> v -jp50
RB> p -jp50
-jp50 Hmmmmm -- why only print 50 lines at a time?
RB> c -s1 -zc:\archive\infodata.cmt
RB> z c:\archive\infodata.cmt
z I don't think there is a command "z" in Arj; -z switch, yes, but
"z" command?
Finally, I find it handy to include the -a switch (system and hidden files)
to all add and extract commands, especially if working with Windows 95 :-)
Cheers, Hans
