| subject: | Re: RH vs. SuSE |
From: Peter Sawatzki
Wow, I was already wondering what does this mean: the Compaq machine with
the installed RedHat Linux 8.0 exactly works one day, when I walk into the
bureau in the morning the screen is all blank and the keyboard LEDs are
blinking. This already happened several times. So I decided to download
SuSE 8.1 and Mandrake 9.1. While ManDrake was downloading I started to
install SuSE (it was the 17MB boot CD version that I planned to use for an
FTP download install). This version begins to boot, I choose standard or
manual install and immediatly get - Boooooom - "kernel panic",
keyboard LEDs are blinking.
It's interesting: this machine was working three years non-stop under NT
Server 4 as a firewall with Symantec Raptor 6.5.2 installed and later with
Win 2000 Server and before mentioned FW software. *Never* had any problems
with it!
After the ManDrake download I today installed it (three CDs). Installed
without a problem. I'll see what it does tomorrow morning.
(and btw before I did install Linux I had tried another W2K install for
another experiment without any problems)
