WT> LGŻ Oooh, Wayne, can anyone play?
WT> Sure! Jump in!!!
Thanks!
WT> LGŻ I prefer Edward Matunas' Optimum Game Weight calculation to the
WT> LGŻ old FPE calculation, which basically gives you a number without
WT> LGŻ any baseline for reference. In most laymen's terms, fpe has very
WT> LGŻ little meaning. Optimum Game Weight, OTOH, tells one *exactly*
WT> LGŻ what one wants to know about the end results of a projectile.
WT> I'm familiar with the above, and it's useful too as long as you are
WT> using playing with modern cartridges.
There's its limitations, alright.
WT> It seems to fall apart when
WT> you plug in heavy, slow-moving projetiles such as those developed
WT> for the Sharps, Ballard, and single-shot Winchesters of the last
WT> quarter of the nineteenth century. It's been fairly well proven
WT> that rounds like the .44-90-500 Sharps, or the .45-110 Winchester
WT> for example can take any game in North America (up to, and including
WT> the big bears) cleanly.
As will the old standby .45-70. Hmmm...Taylor Knock-Out Factor, anyone?
BTW, Elmer Keith must be smiling down fondly on you.
WT> LGŻ and we all know that the .22 will do better than that in the
WT> LGŻ real world.
WT> True. Perhaps by a factor of TEN. IF the right bullet is used, AND
WT> that bullet is placed properly...
Under ideal conditions, even better than ten. Much better. It's all I
ever used to slaughter twelve hundred pound steers and four hundred pound
hogs with. But, as said, those were *ideal* conditions.
WT> LGŻ However, it *does* tell us that the .22 is *best* suited to very
WT> LGŻ small game, much better so, in my way of thinking than does the
WT> LGŻ figure "138 fpe".
WT> I suppose it depends on how you figure. Neither formula is perfect,
WT> but both offer a uniform way of comparing one cartridge to another
WT> as long as you recognize the limitations of each.
Yep. Assuming one has a little knowledge about cartridges in general.
Unfortunately, I run into an inordianate number of people who ought to
know better, but don't. Know one deer hunter who doesn't know the difference
between a 7mm-08 and a 7mm Rem. Mag. And he *hunts with* a 7mm-08.
And he ain't *that* rare, at that.
WT> LGŻ Thanks to Edward A. Matunas for the first half of this post...
WT> LGŻ And to Calypso Louie for the second.
WT> Funny!!! Thanks for the laugh!!!!!!
Just trying to keep it topical. Now, if we could just work some of those
inner city math questions into a ballistics format...
You know, like: "If Johnny was trying to sell an eight-ball, and was
ripped off, how far would he have to lead a running "client" at twenty-
five yards with a Raven .25? Would there be any holdover? Or wind drift?"
Direct to you from the keyboard of Larry Gault...
