Yes... that's what they're doing all right. And, it seems they don't want to
dig where there's no plants - it HAS to be right next to a tomato or pepper
plant so that the roots get exposed.

That sounds like what Linda suggested - capsicum spray. I have some herbs in
pots on the patio but the squirrels don't seem to bother them. They did like
to dig around my chives until I put rocks in the pot where the soil was
exposed - now they leave it alone.

Well... we have a cat but he's an indoor cat - has never been outside in his
entire life and he's 11 years old. He watches from the window but he
robably
wouldn't know what to do with a squirrel if he got up close and personal with
one - he'd probably turn and run the other way! :)
