Well, if the file's only open for a few milliseconds then it shouldn't
really make much difference.  However, if you open a file in deny-read mode
and forget to close it, other applications won't be able to access it while
you're messing with it, thus the situation above.

:-)  The unpredictable-ness of file echos is fairly normal here, IMV.
