Subject: RE: [drakelist] TR7 Volume
The ON/OFF switch ganged with the volume control was very common at the
time. I can't fault the Drake engineers for following what was common
practice. Besides we don't know what kind of pressure they may have been put
under to follow the dictates of the owners or the accountants. In my 34
years of experience in Electronics Engineering I have often found that good
engineering practice gets tossed by the wayside if there is a chance of
saving a few cents worth of material. Of course that translates to lower
selling price and more profits and money for you know who. Hint: it's not
the engineers. With regards to the audio problem, I was able to reduce it
considerably by rerouting the volume control to just ahead of the LM380
input. The downside is it involves cutting some traces and adding jumpers.
Additionally, AM audio level is not as loud. It all comes down to what you
can live with I guess.

Actually, in the commercial radio biz, that's a feature, not a bug.
Keeps dispatchers from turning the volume clean off...
