Welcome back. I've been away for awhile as well.
Here are a couple of positive tidbits about garlic,
the first one interesting to anyone with heart problems:

I attended a Diabetes Training course last night
in which cholesterol/heart attack issues were
raised. The CDE quoted reputable medical sources
which asserted that :
a. Fish Oil (minimum 2 gram/day)
b. Benecol (taken as the margerine, 3 servings per day)
c. Policosanol (10 - 30 mg/day)
are partial replacements for the statins which
some of us cannot take. Regards Old Al

garlic and things like olive oil? >
I checked the hand-outs:
1. Olive oil is a **given**. It is assumed that
folks worried about this matter switch to olive
oil as their cooking oil immediately. (This was a
lecture on supplements. They didn't discuss olive
oil as a supplement)
2. Their remarks on Garlic as a supplement:
"Shown to be effective in reducing cholesterol,
LDL, TG and increasing HDL. Effects may take 4-6
weeks. Adult daily dose 4-12 mg allicin or 3-10
grams fresh garlic or one 600-900 mg tablet.
===Caution: Heat and acid destroy active components
so enteric-coated products show better results"
3. Benecol is a trade name for a patented "plant
sterol". It is sold as the margerine (US $4 for
8 oz) and as in an expensive capsule.
4. Policosanol is a wax obtained from sugar
cane(?). It is sold in pill form, US $0.22 for
10 mg.
Sorry, no citations given. This was a training
course/lecture/seminar conducted by a C.D.E. at a
major hospital. Regards Old Al

Subject: the BEST way to ingest raw garlic

i've been determined to find the most odor-free
way of eating raw garlic and after weeks of
experimenting -- i have found the way and wish to
tell you all.
cut a clove into 4 pieces LENGTHWISE, so that you
have 4 slender quarters. dip it in some oil
(preferably organic, nonrefined flaxseed or olive
oil), place it far back on your tongue, AND
SWALLOW. the oil lets it go down with no burning
and having the clove sliced allows your digestive
system to better break it down to obtain the
mighty allicin. voila. hope it works for you as
well as it has for me-- because i tell you the
pills won't give you nearly the same benefit as
the REAL THING.

actually I'd say its not bad advice, though I'm
used to just eating the stuff raw
From: jrbuffett1{at}sympatico.ca (John B)
The main advantage of eating raw garlic is that if you
eat enough no one will smell onions on your breath. :-)
