I think I found it.  :)  It's in the Configuration Area.  Global, then
Mail Packet Options, last choice is Autosave pkt bookmarks, which should
be toggled to Yes.

To just have that not working, though, makes me wonder what else of your
configuration might have been lost... or just how you managed to
untoggle it... one or the other...  :)   It would seem that restoring
the whole thing from a backup was a wise choice...  :)
