Income and property taxes for starts, the rates are outrageous.

Some states have 'personal property taxes' payable each year and applicable to every
single thing you own.  Nebraska still has that 'personal property tax' but
everything has
been exempted from it except automobiles, boats and airplanes; prior to
that exemption
each citizen was required to file a report with the assessor listing every
single thing
s/he owned - including socks and underwear - so the tax could be assessed;
the assessor
could also appear at one's door and demand to inspect the premises for taxable items
(which was everything).  There were heavy penalties for under-reporting
one's possessions.
