There an entire chapter of America's early space program that most people
know little of. Because of the movie "The Right Stuff" many
people think we went straight from Chuck Yeager to the Mercury Seven
astornauts.
The X-15 flights for example the article mentions were crucial to the NASA
flights we all know about. There was a movie called "X-15" that
was made back in the 60's or early 70's.  While it was a rather dry film it
was kind of fun and interesting to see.
