Rules, Guidelines, and Suggestions

I. Everyone from wife to worst enemy is eligible.

II. All material should be in the form of HTML, Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect documents. Please, avoid other formats if at all
possible—especially plain text, which may be rejected unread, depending on
my mood.

III. The subject is entirely at the author’s discretion, so long as the
reader (and judge) will find it easy to make a clear association with Star
Trek: Liberty and its continuity. For example, a story solely about Spock
is not applicable. One, however, about Spock interacting with Sevek
(Mantovanni's mentor) qualifies. Common sense should be your guide: If I
see where you're going, so will others.

IV. Setting: Sometime after the birth of Luciano Mantovanni (ca. 2266-9),
but before the events in Nature of the Beast (ca. May 2378); somewhere in
the Alpha Quadrant [If you feel an exception is necessary and applicable,
email me and I’ll render a verdict].

V. Please, no crossovers with other science (or fan) fiction universes
without clearing the piece through me.

VI. The story should not violate established Liberty continuity—at least
not greatly. As an artist, I can appreciate a certain license… but don’t
make it a license to kill.

VII. Submissions must be a minimum of 2,500 but not longer than 7,500 words
in length. This range represents an accepted convention for short stories.

VIII. Please adhere to the site’s established editorial style when at all
possible. Italics must be used for thoughts, emphases, and appropriate
nomenclature.

IX. The judging criteria, given weight in this order, will be: Overall
story impact; flow; quality of characterizations; originality of plot; and,
finally, editorial polish. Thus, I suggest using your spell checker and red
pen liberally. If stories impress me equally, yet one is pristine and the
other redolent with errors… well, I think I’ve made my point.

X. The Queen’s English will be respected, though it is preferred if your
submission is made using American spelling, grammatical and punctuation
conventions.

XI. Word to the wise: Stories containing graphic sexuality and/or violence
will be judged with a stricter eye; if deemed gratuitous, your piece will
be marked down accordingly.

XII. Star Trek: Liberty does not have a reset button. If you write a story
in which characters experience significant life-altering events, they will
be evaluated (and accepted or rejected) in the context of both literary
quality and adherence to future plot direction. Thus, sanctioning a
“red-shirt” will probably not cause even a batted eyelash. Destroying the
Liberty or killing off a major player will likely get your story sent back
with a nasty-gram. Again, use both your discretion and common sense.

XIII. Authors will retain full ownership of their stories and all rights
thereto, moderated by the following: Contest submission constitutes
acknowledgment both that the story may be posted at Star Trek: Liberty in
perpetuity, and will neither be reproduced nor posted/archived elsewhere
without my permission for a period of not less than 18 months from
announcement of contest results.

XIV. Permission to employ Liberty characters, situations and plot threads
is granted only for the duration of the contest and the specific stories
submitted and ultimately accepted into Liberty canon. All rights are
otherwise reserved and retained by Joseph Manno and Paramount/Viacom, as
applicable.

XV. The submission deadline is October 25th, 2003. It is unlikely
exceptions will be made—though wheedling has been known to sway me, on
occasion.

XVI. Contest results will be announced on or around November 15th, 2003.

XVII. The Third, Second and Grand Prize winners will be awarded $35,
$50 and $100, respectively, along with publication of their work at the Star
Trek: Liberty website. Honorable mentions, if any, will receive $15 and
consideration for posting/archiving and inclusion in the Liberty canon.

XVIII. Prizes will be awarded on or before November 30th, 2003.

Best of luck to you all. I look forward to reading your submissions.
