Well I can't tell you which one does the best, but I can tell you that 
Practical Peripherials do the WORST!  I bought their PM144MT II modem because 
it said on the box it did distinctive ring. It didn't. I called PP and they 
said the 28.8 one did.  So I bought the PM288MT II modem, set it up and tried 
it. It would work for the first call only, any subsequent calls would not 
distinguish between rings. If I recycled the modem, it would work for the 
first call again, then not the rest. I called and complained and they sent me 
a new BIOS for both. It made no difference. When I complained again I was 
basically told too bad!
