If you're using a filter for health reasons, get your water tested
to see if there's any need. Find a lab that isn't in the business
of selling water treatment equipment. A simple lead test shouldn't
cost more than $10-$30, but a test for all the major pollutants can
run well over $200.
If you dislike the chlorine taste, keep an ordinary pitcher in
the refrigerator, filled with tap water.
Consumer Reports last reviewd water filtration devices in 2/93,
and a countertop filter they like was by Ametek, about $100 U.S.
Sears also sells decent water filters.
