did you after compile of fidoconf do a make install ?, need to be root for
this task, but the compile must NOT be done as root

is /usr/local/lib in your ld.conf.d/ as a path to runtime libs ?

   ----- 99huskylib begins -----
LDPATH="/home/xpoint/fido/lib/"
PATH="/home/xpoint/fido/bin/"
INFOPATH="/home/xpoint/fido/info/"
MANPATH="/home/xpoint/fido/man/"
   ----- 99huskylib ends -----

is what i have on gentoo in /etc/env.d/

i will remove them when i switch to ebuilds here, but you can and should
have all the 4 path to /usr/local for husky when you compile / install from
souces, this is the defaults in linux

compile order is fidoconf, smapi, and then all the rest
