As promised, here is the first bit of the first Churchill story. I'll put
m= ore up as and when I finish it (I've got about 30-40,000 words on the
compu= ter but I'm still putting the finishing touches to it). Any comments
are mo= re than welcome.
STAR TREK CHURCHILL
STORY ONE
CHAPTER ONE
Captain's Log, Stardate 1283. Let the record show that I have taken command=
of this Constitution-Class starship, the U.S.S. Churchill. We are due to d=
epart from Starbase 1 in four days on a trajectory that will take us into
u= ncharted territory within three months. By the time we get there, any
probl= ems with this newly completed vessel should have been solved.=20
As he turned off the log recorder on his chair Captain Thomas Brand smiled.=
The bridge of the Churchill was quiet as most of the engineering teams onb=
oard were working in the engineering section. He knew that most of his life=
for five years would be spent and the idea filled him with a strange sense=
of pride.
Brand looked at the view out of the main viewscreen at the great expanse of=
the upper side of the vessel's saucer section. A trio of EVA-suit clad fig=
ures stood at the outer edge of the hull, inspecting a section of the hull.=
Brand walked to the Communications console and opened a comms line. "Lieut=
enant, are the microfractures bad enough that you will need to replace
thos= e deck plates?". One of the figures turned and nodded.=20
The voice that emerged from the speakers was calm. "Aye Captain, I
don't th= ink the plating would stand up to anything over warp 6.5 without
buckling. = I'll have to replace it then go over any plating from the same
shipment inc= ase the flaw is common to all of them".
Brand smiled, he knew that Lieutenant Tabitha Burke, informally known to
he= r friends as Tabby, was on her first tour of duty as Chief Engineer and
she=
was determined nothing was wrong. The fact that she was recommended to him=
by her former CO as, in his opinion, one of the best engineers in the flee=
t meant that Brand was certain that she could handle any problems that were=
likely to crop up. "Understood, Contact Starfleet Command if you need any =
more engineering crew".
Lieutenant Burke nodded again before speaking. "I don't think that
will be = neccesary but if it is I will do that Captain". Brand turned
off the comms = and walked around the side of the bridge until he was
standing in front of = the viewscreen, watching the three figures busily
removing the offending hu= ll-plate from the hull.=20
As he watched, Brand considered the future. He was going to be commanding a=
untried ship and crew into unknown territory, far beyond the range of inst=
antaneous subspace communication. The crew would essentially be on it's own=
should they encounter anything dangerous. Despite his confidence in his cr=
ew, Brand still felt a little nervous. He just hoped it was unjustified.
