An but the Star liner QE2 isn't armed ot the teeth and prepared to do
amazing science all at once.  It's a specialist, go fast, pamper the
passengers.    The Liberty is fast and versatile, the QE2 is just fast.

Keep also in mind that the starship must be robust beyond anything a
civilian liner can be expected to endure.  A ship making the Earth Vulcan
Andor triangle run is never how far from search and rescue if she breaks
down?  Such a ship can afford to be light and fast at the expense of
robust.  The Greyhounds of the Atlantic carried no guns and no armor such
as shouldered by the super dreadnoughts that were their contemporaries. 
That is my model here.
