McNamara has always struck me as one of the most disgusting human beings of
the last fifty years.  What you pointed out just confirms that opinion all
the more.

Frankly, I've never quite understood this obsession with "Balance of
Power" anyway.  It always seemed like an excuse to allow all sorts of
evil to go on.

And it's an added kick in the crotch for McNamara that it was the fear of
advancing US technology that allowed individuals like Gorbachev to come to
power in the old USSR and push for reforms.

If we'd had space planes and a "real" space transport system back
then maybe all that cold war insanity might have ended a little bit sooner.
