Hidden Paragraph Mark Allows Multiple Styles to Paragraphs

SUMMARY
By applying the hidden character attribute to paragraph marks,
you can simulate multiple style formatting to what appears to be
one paragraph. Normally, you can only apply a single style to
each paragraph. Because there is still a paragraph marker
separating the individual paragraphs, each paragraph still
contains only one style. By hiding the paragraph markers,
Microsoft Word for Windows adjusts the first line of the
following paragraph to the hidden marker, making the two separate
paragraphs appear as a single paragraph.
MORE INFORMATION
To make two separate paragraphs appear as a single paragraph in
Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a, follow the steps
below:
1. Apply a style, such as heading 1, to a paragraph of text.
2. From the View menu, choose Preferences and select the Show All
check box. Select the paragraph marker.
3. From the Format menu, choose Character, and select Hidden.
4. Clear the Show All check box and verify that Hidden Text is
not selected in the View menu's Preferences options box.
To work around this problem in Word for Windows 2.0, follow the
steps below:
 1. Apply a style, such as heading 1, to a paragraph of text.
 2. Display paragraph marks by choosing the Paragraph Marks button.
 Select the paragraph marker.
 3. From the Format menu, choose Character, and select Hidden.
 4. Turn Paragraph Marks off. To verify that hidden text is not
selected from the Tools menu choose Options and select the
 View category.
This procedure hides the paragraph mark, joining the two
paragraphs into one on the screen, while retaining their separate
applied styles. This technique is useful for applying a style or
multiple styles to a portion of a paragraph. This functionality
is not available in Word for Windows except under these
circumstances.
To print, make sure that Hidden Text is not selected under the
Print menu's Options.
