A profiler would be closely related to the compiler, in the same way that a source level debugger is. The profiler needs to be able to relate lines of source code to lumps of executable code in order to give you a usable interface (unless you like working at assembly language level...). As it compiles the source, the compiler has to provide some sort of "map" for the profiler to read. As there is no standard (that I've heard of) for these maps, a profiler is very likely to be specific to one compiler. Which compiler (incl version) are you using?
