In reverse order:
Filksings in Atlantic Canada: Toronto isn't quite Atlantic, but FilKONtario
tends to consistantly have quite an impressive level of overall musicality
(almost to the point of being intimidating for newcomers, but even if you
spend the weekend just listening it's well worth attending). April 11th-13th
this year, in a hotel near the Toronto airport.
Performance: _In_General_, most folks are flattered if you like their song
enough to want to sing it to friends. It's a nice gesture to take a moment
to give them credit (which also helps other folks who want to learn the song).
And if you're
just singing it in a filk circle, that usually qualifies as
"fair use" under copyright laws.
Obviously, if you're performing for pay that's another matter entirely,
and you should contact the author regarding royalties. It's not entirely a
bad idea to drop 'em a note anyway, at some point, so they know how much
you like their work.
(The above works for many pros as well. I sent a letter to someone a while
back saying "I love this song; where can I find a recording and/or a
songbook that contains it" -- enclosing a SASE -- and got back a letter,
sheet music for that song and five others, and a promise that I'd be put
on the mailing list for announcement of recording/songbook when he
has time to assemble one. This probably won't work with someone who
is a huge commercial success -- but most folkies aren't huge commercial
successes, and are absolutely delighted to hear from fans.)
Having said all that, a quick reminder of something that you probably
already know: It's bad form to post someone else's lyrics to the newsgroup
w/out their permission (unless they've added themselves to the "blanket
permission list" in the FAQ document). _Usually_ it's OK to send a single
copy direct to one other person. Again, this is related to copyright versus
fair use.
Re "A Grazing Mace" -- Never learned it, sorry.
