Well I am getting a lot closer. As I said I am using Cygwin and found out
that after a failed build I have to do a 'find . -name "*.o"
-exec rm {} \;' or things really hit the fan. I also added

#ifdef __CYGWIN__
#define O_NOINHERIT 0x40000
#endif

in unix/include/io.h right before the FreeBSD definition. This gives
warnings because Cygwin defines it in fcntl.h but I will worry about that
later.

Things seem to go pretty well until I get to btree and it appears the build
has problems because it uses gcc instead of g++.
