Concerning _Cloned Scanners_, Bill Cheek said to Troy H. Cheek in SCANRADIO:
TC>> The firmware of the 2035 has really grown on me, and the 2042 reads
TC>> as even better.
BC>
BC> Yeah, but it would be a lot better if that firmware were software
BC> instead.
BC> Better still if it were all hardware with just an open interface.
No argument. But though I tend to dream big, I *try* to actually plan with
what I've got available (or reasonably hope to). Where can I buy a scanner
that will let me program my own search routines? Sigh. WinRadio sounds so
interesting to me because it seems that I could really unleash my programming
skills on it. However, I don't want to be shackled to a computer. Better
would be a scanner with a programmable processor. Load the custom search
program, then disconnect it and take it on the road. Download the results
when you get home. Just cloud talk.
I could buy a used 2004, build and install a CE-232, and write custom
programs to do what the 2042 can do. I can then build from there, adding
other mods that I'm interested in later. Or I could just start from the
2042, trading some longterm versatility for convenience and the "now" factor,
then adding other mods that I'm interested in later.
If you done like I hoped, and explained how the 2042 was a Uniden-built chip
in a case with no hackable components, I wouldn't be in this quandry. But,
noooooooo...
BC> Hardware-wise, the two are the same, so the mods will all work fine.
BC> To apply mods for the PRO-2004/5/6 to the PRO-2035/2042 might require
BC> a little ingenuity or inventiveness in some instances, but nothing
BC> out of the ordinary.
Nothing that getting the service manuals, brushing up on my basic
electronics, buying and familiarizing myself with your first two scanner
modification books, and actually taking the time to sit down and do it right
won't overcome?
... All wiyht. Rho sritched mg kegtops awound?
