Star Trek is a copyrighted property, Nehemiah.  it belongs to Paramount
Pictures, Inc.

all the things inside Star Trek - Vulcans, Warp Drives, the Borg, phasers,
all of the ideas that are part of Trek belong to them too.

When I make up Captain Hailey,  he's my character.   but the Starfleet
Uniform he wears, the Starfleet ship he commands,  those belong to
Paramount, and frankly,  we're in at best a gray area of the law when we
use them.

Fanfiction is illegal.

However - Paramount has discovered that fanfiction is also good
advertising. It's way for the fan-base of the show to keep itself engaged.

Paramount used to come down hard on people who posted a lot trek pictures
and graphics on their websites.  Those all belong to Paramount.  I don't
know if they do any more.

You may have noticed little trademark notices appearing on Trek Books and
merchandising.  Captain James T Kirk,  the "Starship Enterprise" 
and other Trek phrases are trademarked now.  this is so no one can make
money selling stories about Captain John R. Kirk and another Starship named
"Enterprise"
