Ah yes, saw your reply after I posted. My web page uses ajax in
javascript to call a php script which calls a bash script which calls
mpc which calls mpd.... and the result gets displayed on the web page.

Crucial step to get it working was to grant permission to the web server
user www-data to call the bash script (and a scheduler, and shutdown; so
I guess that might be a huge gaping security hole now, or at least a
very promising new attack vector): sudo visudo and add a line.
