DM> Jim, I see by the board designation that you are in Oregon. Maybe you
DM> can give me some free advice on an idea I have.
Yes, I live about twenty miles west of Portland. And my advice is always
free.
DM> I was born in Coos Bay, and would like to get some info on the Oregon
DM> Costal Natives of that area. Do you know off hand of anywhere that I
DM> could get some info.
Sure. You are talking about the Coos (or I suppose more properly the
Coosans). I don't know of a lot that has been written about them
_specifically_ but you could try and locate the following books:
"Handbook of the North American Indians - Northwest Coast - Volume Seven"
published by the Smithsonian Institution. This would probably be your
best place to start. While it doesn't have a LOT of specific information,
it might point you to other available sources.
"Indians of the Pacific Northwest" written by Ruby and Brown.
"The First Oregonians" published by The Oregon Council for the Humanities.
This book also has some sources you could look for.
"Oregon Indians: Culture, History and Current Affairs" by Zucker, Hummel and
Hogfoss.
"The Indians of Western Oregon: This Land Was Theirs" by Stephen Dow
ckham.
And I would suggest your best bet to locate any of the above titles would be
a college or university library in the Anthropology section.
And, the Coos do have a tribal organization in Coos Bay, but I don't have a
specific address. Officially, it's "The Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower
Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians".
