PS>DR>JM>We have a dual-ring line in our home. (Actually, we have
PS>DR>JM>three numbers on the same line. 1-800 also.) The second
PS>DR>JM>ring is for the fax, and we don't answer it. fax will
PS>DR>JM>respond to incoming faxes AFTER answering machine answers.
PS>DR>JM>Some faxes can't handle this, and we get hangups.
PS>DR> Not only can't the inbound fax's handle that, but many times
PS>DR>the sender will monitor the call and when they hear a machine
PS>DR>they will dump the call, esp. if they don't know that the fax
PS>DR>answers after the machine. I know, I've done that on occasion
PS>DR>myself till a friend clued me in.
PS>On way I've tried to solve that problem is to give instructions on
PS>sending a fax with the answer machine announcement. That has
PS>worked for me so far.
The only drawback I see with that is if a computer generated the
fax, the software may be timed to abort the call before your
announcement was completed.
But hey, if it works for you - great! Now if you could only clue
in the rest of the world to do the same.
I just purchased an MFC (great machines!!!). It is "smart" enough
to route a voice message to the handset with a distinctive ring. It
has an option to set it up with an answering machine on the same line.
Just haven't tried that feature yet.
