Actually, the AL-III is 6 feet tall. There are only two
drivers that cover from 30Hz-20kHz. A 10" down-firing woofer, mounted
in a hexagonal enclosure covers from 30Hz-150Hz and a 48" dipole
ribbon covers from 150Hz-20kHz. Since the 48" ribbon is only 1" wide,
there is no "beaming" like most other planar speakers and the imaging
is almost pin-point (extremely rare for most planar speaker designs).
There are also no critical crossover regions, as in multiple planar
driver designs that use more than one planar element (such as from
Apogee & Magnepan).
Carver also makes a 60" ribbon driver that was used in the now
discontinued Platinum Edition line and is still available for DIY
hobbyists because Genesis OEMs both the 48" and the 60" for their
5-figure speaker lines.
