One sure but ugly way is to check if a known file is in a known path on the
server. In that case you don't only know the server is running, but also that
the interface PC is logged in and the drive mappings are set correctly.

So you already know what file to look for ;-). And the path can either be
hardcoded (I don't like that), put in an environment variable (better, but
still
not to my liking) or retrieved from some sort of an ini-file (my preference).

I don't know if I agree... If the interface program crashed, there must be a
reason why. An automatic reboot will maybe work, but that doesn't solve the
reason why it crashed. IMHO it's better to send a broadcast to some users
the
telephone operator or receptionist e.g.) and/or to email or page the system
operator. If you just reboot the interface machine, nobody will notice a
(possible) problem.
And if the PABX is a Siemens Hicom 372, you wouldn't want to reboot and try
again for more than 10 minutes, because then the PABX gives up trying to
contact
the interface and needs to be reset... :-(

Yes, you definitely DO need a shell. That's what novlib uses to login.

That's also possible if you create an account without password but with a
station restriction. I use it on all interface PC's we're using (PABX, pay-tv
and keycard system, I'm working in a hotel).
