Well, need some more info about your machine. What version of DOS and
Windows are you running? I would guess you are not running Win95
because I would bet Win95 would not even run with Hyperdisk.
I don't know anything about Win95, but could give you some opinions
about helping Win 3.1x.
I have used Quicken for Win Version 1, 3, and now 4. Each has gotten
slower than the previous version. I would guess that 5 will be also
generally slower.
With 4, I have a 486DX-33 with 16meg memory. Since I have a password
set, its tough to time it, but I guarentee that I can get mine up and
running with a password entered in less than half your 43 seconds.
Just tried it, 16 seconds including the password entry.
My first opinion, if you have DOS 6.0 or later, would be to drop Hyperdisk.
Nothing much will beat Microsoft Smartdrv's speed (at least by a very
significant amount.) And I have a wild guess that you may not have
Windows '32 bit Disk Access' and '32 bit File Access' running if you
have a non-Microsoft cache running. And I won't discuss the pros or
cons of disk caches. If you 'believe' in Hyperdisk, ok, but I think it
will hurt you in Windows.
In general, if you have DOS 6.2x and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (latest
versions before Win95), set SMARTDRV 2048 256, (gives 2meg cache in
DOS, 256K in Window {to cache floppies}), in Windows get into CONTROL
PANEL, ENHANCED, VIRTUAL MEMORY, CHANGE and set for swapfile about 4056 KB
PERMANENT (not temporary), set USE 32-bit Disk Access, and Use 32-bit
File Access (cache) and with your 8 meg of memory a Cache Size of
1,500 to 2,000KB.
The above works only for an IDE disk drive. If you have a SCSI drive,
I don't know much about them, but don't think 32-bit Disk Access will
run on them.
Also, if you have a IDE CDROM running on the same cable (meaning it
is on the same interrupt) as your harddrive, you will not be able to
turn on 32-bit Disk Access. If you have a hard drive larger than
504meg and an older motherboard BIOS, you cannot get 32-bit DISK
Access to turn on.
And of course, in CONFIG.SYS use HIMEM, EMM386, set DOS=UMB,HIGH and
if you have WINforWrkgrp3.11 - DEVICE C:\WINDOWS\ISFHLP.SYS (the cache
for windows).
Oh, yes. In DOS, not in Windows, before you do the above, run SCANDISK
and get rid any cross-linked files it finds. And then run DEFRAG. Or
their equivalent if you have some other utility package such as Norton.
This will get your disk in as good shape as possible.
If you have DOS 6.0 or above, run MEMMAKER to optimize the CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT to DEVICEHIGH and LOADHIGH as much as possible to
free up as much memory below 640k as possible. This doesn't have much
to do with speed in Windows, but this, with the above, will optimize
your system as much as can 'normally' be done. (Take the 'standard'
option in MEMMAKER, don't customize or attempt to 'tweek' it if you
don't absolutely know what you are doing.)
Also, do you have other application open in Windows when you are
starting Quicken? If so, then Windows will have to swap them out
before loading up Quicken. If you have constant disk activity for the
entire 43 seconds this is probably happening.
