Waitaminnit, wasn't that "They Call The Wind Maria" from "Paint Your
Wagon" that was under discussion? That was by Lerner & Loewe.
Sondheim did write the lyrics (Leonard Bernstein wrote the music) for
"Maria" in "West Side Story", and in that song, it's pronounced
"mar-ee-ah". The Lerner & Loewe uses "mar-aye-ah".
