The Solicitor General, Harriet Harman, is to visit Eurojust, to step-up
efforts across the EU to tackle the problem of human trafficking. She will
use the visit to strengthen the agenda against trafficking, and encourage
all member states to be tough.

She said: "This is about abuse and exploitation of women and children, it is
nothing short of modern-day slavery.

"It is an international crime, so we have to co-operate across borders with
all our partners to tackle it, directing our energies at three aspects: the
protection of victims and witnesses, the detection and prosecution of
offenders and the seizure of the proceeds of these crimes.

"The Government is determined to protect women and children, particularly
from the threat of violent and sexual offences, and support the vulnerable
in developing countries. We are gearing up our work at national level to
tackle serious organised crime, but to be really effective, it is vital that
we tackle this problem internationally."

Ms Harman is also using the visit to launch a new 'human trafficking
prosecution kit', created in liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service. The
kit identifies all trafficking legislation in an easily accessible format.
It will be distributed to prosecutors, police, and immigration officers, as
well as national representatives at Eurojust and European counter-parts as a
basic guide to UK legislation.

"This 'kit' shows how we are turning strategy into practice, and that we are
serious about bringing offenders to justice - not merely arrest, but the
prospect of jail. We are determined not to let the traffickers get away,"
said Ms Harman.
