Hehe i remember 'chipping the ship' to get ice off it so we could go
underway. I had my guys setup with reliefs (took me about 30 mins to put tht
on papr and print out copies that all had). My turn came and it ws Joe (same
name as you). He looked at me askance, and mildly said but Chief, I'm a big
guy and not sure you can shovel 50lbs of ice like I been doin' so I'll stay'.

I ripped that shovel right out of his hands, told him I needed his gloves (i
was dumb and didnt have any onboard just then) then grabbed his ear muffs
(didnt have those either). Told him if he wanted'em back, he'd best come
find what I was doing and relieve me on time or I'd rip open his windpipe and
stuff something nasty down it.

Needless to say he found me and if he was 10 mins late, thats because he had
to wander about to find where I was in the middle of a blizzard. He took the
sledge hammer, gloves, and ear muffs back then swapped to the big shovel next
chance so one of us smaller pups could just chip it down and he could move it
off. We did this about 3 times.

There was one youngun of mine later with us as we got underway, who
dang near got obliterated by Joe and the rest of my troops. He was moaning
about how he was up there and the 'senior folks were not' (looking at me of
all folks!). The worst was he was a shirker so did not relieve the PO2 he was
supposed to, (who came down senisibly after he was getting far too cold to
function) and one of my PO1's took an extra turn after a mere 15 mins warm up
to replace him. 40 people, 1 hour each, 20 on station at all times including
my Ensign.

The young man did not do well but that was just a symptom first evident of
what later showed to be a main work ethic problem.

Later we had to task him with more PMS than most as he knew his liberty
depended on it, and he was never helping with anything else while the others
were having to do their PMS 'after liberty was started' because they were
helping with all other needed things. So, he'd skip away at 3pm and everyone
else was there til 6pm. Once I adjusted that, he was not amused as he had to
stay and work hard to get off by 4pm but the other guys who busted ass, got
off near the same time too.

Works for me.

No more 'Oh I cant help set up that circuit as i have to do this PMS' while
ignoring the others had stuff to do too after it. He hated me with a passion
and i do not care. I have no idea what happened to him later, but his work
ethics were so lacking he probably got fired several times before the cluebat
hit him.
