True.  I don't know about Europe, but on the US/Mexico border, illegals
may become migrant workers, or they may become slaves, depending on
luck and perhaps on how they cross.  Sometimes they find Americans on
the Mexican side looking for labor, so they agree to be smuggled
across, and they wind up on some remote farm where they have no
protection and no way of going anywhere.  Then they are slaves.  They
can also wind up chained to a desk in a sweat shop.

In other cases, employers can blackmail illegals by threatening to
report them to the INS.  It's bullsh-t, because the employer would also
get dinged for hiring illegals, but the illegals don't know that.

Then there are parolees.  They have to work as a condition of parole,
and knowing this, the employer can mistreat them, because the workers'
other alternative is prison, where they may be beaten, raped, shanked
in the face, or worse.

It would be awfully nice if people who are elected to represent the
public would represent _all_ of the public.  I've no problem if NOW
choose to care only about women, because they've no obligation to care
for anyone else.  But a Senator or an MP is supposed to protect the
freedom of everyone.  Unfortunately, there are people like Harriet
Somethingorother who protect only one group, leaving the rest to the
wolves.
