You are allowed one a year from EACH agency that offers that information 
to credit grantor's.  To most people that means the big three. If you
request one from each, spaced 3 months apart, you can get a free report
every 90 days till you die.
Where the crooks get people is they charge more for the FICA credit score.
If you do not know exactly what you are ordering you may not get what you
think you did.

Then on the legit side 10 bucks a month there is at least one company that
will do that and a whole lot more to protect your financial/credit/ and
Identity from costing you if your information  should be stolen and used.
I think I read you would be covered up to a million.

I can't find the numbers but the I remember that more fraud comes from
giving a person on a phone your card numbers than entering them on line.
