Unfortunately his son, Edward VIII, didn't pick it up from him. He said of
Edward "That boy's going to ruin himself within a year after I'm
gone" - and
he was pretty close to right. George VI, the younger son, was more diffident
and considered himself to be just an average man, not suited to the job fate
had thrust on him. Did a damned fine job for a man "unsuited" to the post,
I'd say

I don't even want to be all that rich. I just want to make enough from my
writing that I don't have to commute to work every day.

I hate it. I've been on stage - my mother's dream was to be on stage so she
pushed all of us into it one way or another. Not my thing at all. I have no
desire to be anyone else, and no desire to be in front of a mass of other
people, and no desire to have to fuss with costumes, make-up, remembering
lines, etc etc etc. Headache, horrors, tension, stress. Not for me. I do
like being invisible and making things work, though, and seeing how people
enjoyed it never knowing who'd done it. That gives me a thrill

I learned how to avoid getting attention by entering a room. Took practice,
but I can safely go almost anywhere now and never be noticed. Makes for a
much less nerve-wracking life. Never have to worry about what you were
wearing, because no one will remember.

Laurie happens to me when I take off my glasses, too Phoenix
