In my original R-4B I "defaced" the MS-4 speaker grille by drilling a hole
and installing a 1/4" jack. MS-4 speaker grilles are much easier to find
than R-4B front panels! I guess you could even make a new grille and paint
it to look original. Anyway, this solution or "defacing" also solves the
problem of having the headphone jack too close to the RF gain and mode
switch. Particularly if you have large fingers.

As Garey points out, it would certainly take away from its value.
It's easy to accomplish the same thing by making an adapter
with about 8" of wire, a female jack on one end, and a male on the other...
bring the connector out via this cable to a jack below the front panel.
RS has the female 1/4" jacks w/housing to do a neat job of this without
breaking out the (cringe) drill bits... :-)
