I started as a point in late 1988, a bit before you did and I ran Confmail
briefly. I then switched to Msged in 1989 and started using 1.97. I
continued using Msged until 1992, stopping with 2.07. I actually found the
whole sequence relatively stable. The source code was readily available as
msgdxxxs.zoo but I never acquired a copy although I do have executables for
1.97, 1.99 and 2.07.

I think the first release was 1.90.
