All CD/RW drives, SCSI or ATAPI or USB or Firewire, should e detected as
CD-Roms with writing capabilities, as long as your controller is supported.
You can write to a CD/RW using cdrecord, cdrdao or k3b
(right-mousebutton-menu over the CD icon). There are no special
"drivers" required, though you probably have to set the writing
method to "generic-mmc" in k3b. cdrecord -scanbus can tell you
the virtual SCSI-ID under which your writer can be found.

However, if you have a Knoppix-CD in your writer, you won't be able to copy
CDs, unless you overwrite your KNoppix-CD (which will probably crash the
system sooner or later). Also, some IDE controllers don't like it if you
copy from one CD to the other on the same cable.

After HD install, burning should work as usual. You have to make sure that
your lilo.conf contains an entry like hdc=scsi if you have an ATAPI
CD-Writer on that port. Again, cdrecord -scanbus will tell you the SCSI-ID
of your writer. You don't need any special device files under
/dev for burning, since cdrecord and cdrdao just look for the SCSI IDs
on the command line (option dev=0,0,0 in cdrecord or --device 0,0,0 in cdrdao).
