Simply because there is no other choice if you want to use certain hardware.
This can also be an issue with WiFi and Video cards.

I haven't used a printer in many years but when I needed one I was told to use
an Epson one because it would work with linux. So I bought an Epson printer and
indeed it worked for me without issues or external drivers.

I still have that printer but haven't used it in many years.
