following up a message from Richard Webb to John Massey:
RW> A city which provides good low cost public transport to enable
RW> aforementioned low paid service workers to get to jobs has some
RW> responsibility to assure the same workers safety when the inevitable
RW> hurricane is coming. IF this means evacuation, which logic dictates
RW> it should, then these leaders should plan to provide a means to do
RW> so for the large segment of the population which cannot evacuate by
RW> private automobile. Hence, I maintain the government of the city
RW> and state bears a large part of the responsibility for what happened
RW> in that city.
NOw if you've read my past posts you wonder how this squares with my
libertarian phiolsophy. We have aided and abetted these folks sucking on
the sugar tit now for two generations or more. Hence, we bear
responsibility for people who have been poorly educated and whose
dependency has been encouraged in the name of jobs for the social services
folks. YEt as with the illegal alien problem, this attitude helps keep
wages low and assures the big corporations a supply of flunkies.
I remember one call I got on vhf ham radio during my stint working the
hospital after the storm. SOme guy was holed up at the Hyatt Regency hotel.
HE'd finally scrounged enough aa batteries to make his portable ham
transceiver work. HE heard me working traffic with our other campus and
asked me to arrange assistance for him and others trapped at the hotel.
SOme of those were civic leaders I later learned, but others were tourists
who stayed to party instead of heeding warnings from local leaders to get
out.
Regards,
Richard
