DH> Sorry to say, I have unsubscribed from that list, it was a good

JO> Oh, sorry to hear that, but I know what you mean. Before PRN
JO> went "internet" our traffic was about a third what it is now.

DH> My problem has been primarily one of time, and I am still
DH> spending to much time on my mail! The reason I do, is because I

I know just what you mean. I am in the very same boat. I haven't been
working the long hours at my regular job lately...and I guess you'd
think I'd still be able to finish up when I'm off, but it never seems
to work out that way. I've been involved a lot with computers outside
work lately, but not usually anything as simple as doing my mail. At
least I finally got my brother on the internet, and got my Windows97
Office working...now, if I can only figure the darned thing out...Dos
Edit it's not! But when I'm in a hurry I end up going back to Dos. ;)
DH> and it seems as if Mr Heston is quite unpopular with a lot of
DH> the folks in that echo. What gives?
JO> I'm afraid it's true. Most of the guys there are long time
JO> members or board directors and they are not happy. There has
JO> been a long battle between the Charlton "mainstream the NRA"
JO> Heston's group and Neal "radical extremist" Knox's group. Neal
JO> is a no compromise guy, plus he's also been pushing for

DH> Thanks for the information, I was wondering what was going on.
DH> One thing I have noticed over the last several years, is a
DH> tendency among some conservatives to demand a strict adherence
DH> to what they consider to be the proper conservative view, and
DH> in the process a lot of good people are taken to task for not
DH> being conservative enough. I was wondering if this might be
DH> what is going on among the NRA folks?
JO> I don't think so, but then, I'm a Neal Knox "extremist" myself,
JO> and I really didn't care for Heston's statement that they were
JO> going to "purge the NRA of extremists". He and his
JO> "mainstreamers" are just blowing money-- *my* money, trying to
JO> make the NRA palatable to the general public, and that will
JO> never happen.
[snip]
I meant to tell you that I do agree with you about the strict demands
toward being conservative enough, and losing people along the way. I
think that has been a real problem in government, and in part for the
NRA. In some ways there are two similar factions in the NRA, but the
biggest gripe seems to be the "talking heads" and what they're doing
with all the money, which would be more of a common sense issue.
DH> Looks like this is something which is going to take some time
DH> to settle out. Best of luck on this!
It does seem to be a bit of a mess. I'm sticking with them for now
since you can't vote if you aren't a member, but anything extra I
might have given toward buying NRA things will be going to the GOA,
2ndAF, and CCRKBA for memberships. They are all cheaper anyway--at
$20 or less a year.
JO> Er, sorry to write a novel...you must have caught me too soon
JO> after my recent "revelations" and this is the first time I've
JO> summed it all up and put the thoughts into words. I've always
JO> been quite the cynic, but these days, I am waaaaay beyond
JO> that...wherever that is!
DH> No problem, your "novels" are usually quite informative.
Thanks, David. It's sweet of you to say so. I still wish I knew more
than I do, but I haven't seen too many of my friends on the board
since this started. (I missed the last NRA get together since it was
in Seattle.) But at least I still get a lot of private e-mail or
phone calls to keep me posted. I'd really hate to be trying to figure
it out just by the mail posted in PRNet. I know most of the guys
involved (which helps) but it's *still* confusing.
