SK> You know, I never have understood why someone will upgrade to 28.8,

SK> I've seen some 28.8 modems with slower screen draws than this Supra
SK> 14.4. I have gotten up to almost 1700 cps on transfers. Thats fast
SK> enough for me. 28.8 is faster, but not near as fast as many people hoped
SK> it would be.
1700cps? My SupraFax288 can get throughputs of 3200cps when connected to
another good modem! That's almost twice as fast. It means that I load my
web pages faster. It means that my BBS is down less while I'm pulling files
off the internet. It means my BBS users spend half as much time uploading
and downloading!
And in addition to speed, let's not forget the additional technologies in the
288s. The 288s can retrain speeds. That means if the line quality drops or
increases, they can lower or raise the throughput rates in the middle of a
call. They also handle double connect speeds. If the line quality is better
in one direction than it is in the other, the 288 will transmit and receive
at two different speeds, instead of settling for the slow one.
Right now, the biggest limitation to the 288s is the FCC. They only require
phone companies to maintain FAX lines at 14,400, and voice and data lines at
9600. Once 28,800 FAXes start coming out in quantity, we should start seeing
28,800 phone lines, and throughputs should jump to 3400cps easily!
Now, I'll grant, if all you use your modem for is faxes and an occasional BBS
call, 14.4 is plenty. But if your serious with your modem, there is no
question that you want a 288.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
