Yes, but 8" drivers don't move enough air, unless you use a lot of them.
The way I see it, a driver (or set of drivers) should have at least the
surface area of the instrument that they are reproducing. A bass drum
head has a good bit of surface area, and a pair of 8" drivers would have
to work hard to repro the lower fundamentals of the instrument. I agree
that faster drivers sound more natural (because they have lower mass
diaphragms), but the weight of all those magnets adds up quickly. One of
my very favorite subwoofers is the Community VBS-415; they punch better
than a dual 18", and they are much faster, but those things are beastly
to haul around. To track the transient attacks, use a bunch of smaller
drivers (sounds great), but I would be more inclined to go with 12"
drivers, since they have the surface area, and are still faster than 15"
or 18" drivers. Take care.
