It depends on a lot of things.
Birds have varied personalities. Some have been through trauma before they
ever came to you and it's had an effect on them. Some are very affectionate
and want to be held and handled by their caretakers all the time. Some never
do. Some take awhile to come around. Some take years. There's no set answer.
You just continue to be gentle with them and work with them and eventually
most fo them will trust you and being handled will not be a problem.
What does the bird see in your household? Is it a quiet house, or chaotic? A
lot of yelling (not necessarily angry)? Kids running around?
If the bird senses any danger, it is going to do things to protect itself.
Nipping and flying away are it's two main acts of self preservation. :-)
