-=> Quoting William Elliot to Andrew Masten <=-
>>> Andrew Masten on Black and White
AM> I don't think good and evil are equal counterparts. People routinely
AM> do good for its own sake. I can't think of people doing evil for
AM> evil's sake.
WE> They're called sadists.
No, sadists hurt others for sexual gratification. Which is OK in itself,
its the method of gratification which is disapproved of.
WE> I would consider bad to be the opposite of good.
I think one is a perversion or twisted attempt at the other. You
can't have a rotten apple without a good one to measure it by. But
a good apple can stand on its own.
WE> Besides good and bad there is also impartial. Evil is an
WE> emphatic sense of bad. Many things deemed bad aren't considered evil.
WE> Spilling milk for example. So evil is not the opposite of good. >>>
I still say the measure of evil is how far off the mark it is from
good. As evil as Hitler was, at least at the beginning he thought
he was doing good for his country.
