There didn't seem to be an easy way to look for bug reports, at least
not based purely on the error message keywords. In the end a simple
web search turned up more than a few keyword matches, going back several
years. It seems pretty obvious the bug is an old one.

I'll wait a bit and play some more. For the moment it appears the trouble
is tied to chromium; firefox works on the website that crashed chromium.
