Because he spent the better portion of the remaining 23 days laid up with a
ankle injury that allowed him to leave the USAF.
(He will also tell you that he played canasta with a AF General in the hospital)

Of course I work with a fellow that was a weapons mechanic for the F16 and
the training program is much much longer than any time Sauer would have had
left after basic... Given the array of weaponry the A10 wielded compared to
the F16, I would say the training for the A10 was more intensive..

My own brother was in the USAF from 87-91, his specialty was not aircraft
support, but even his training took longer than 3 weeks.
