Of course, we could always suggest that a new standard of making boards 
primarily line level, and keeping the preamps at the end of the mic cable.  
That would allow unlimited bridging without splitters.  Going one step 
beyond, add a digital fiber optic snake to each board, and there'd be no 
chance of ground loops.  
Until the days of 130 dB EIN preamps, that simply wasn't practical.
